Foreword
In the digital age, professionals from all walks of life generate more value than before because they have access to online resources and services. A data center is where the resources and services live. As we face the challenges of tomorrow, it is becoming imperative for every organization, whether public or private, to empower its team of experts by building and managing its own data center.

This may seem like a herculean task, especially for an IT manager who is new to the game. Fortunately, the proliferation of data centers has made the knowledge and the components affordable and accessible. All you need is a guide, and some excellent solutions to help you get started.

This tech guide is presented by GIGABYTE, a leading brand of server solutions. It is intended to answer some of your fundamental questions about how to build a data center. It also recommends GIGABYTE products which may be suitable for you. While the guide is intended to serve as an introductory handbook for beginners, we hope experts in the field will find new, valuable insights in the following pages, as well.

1. What is a Data Center?
Our modern digital age would not be possible without data centers—physical facilities where organizations keep applications and information on a matrix of IT equipment, including computing, storage, and networking devices. Every time you send an email at work; place a purchase on an ecommerce website; scroll through your social media feed—chances are, there’s a data center out there somewhere, doing all the heavy lifting on the other end of the intangible line.

Data centers have existed in one form or another since the 1940s. They come in various sizes, from a single cabinet to a gigantic multi-warehouse complex. Their degrees of reliability and security also differ. According to the “Telecommunications Infrastructure Standard for Data Centers” (ANSI/TIA-942-A) published by the Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA), a Level 4 data center is outfitted with enough redundant subsystems to continue operating even during major power outages. Sophisticated data centers like these are usually reserved for the most mission-critical tasks.
In recent years, there has been a trend towards virtualization. The modern data center is not limited to a centralized facility; instead, it may be a combination of physical infrastructure and cloud computing resources. This has resulted in optimized workload distribution across pools of computational resources; it has also made data centers more affordable and accessible. Whatever the scope of your operations, you can supplement your data center with leased colocation centers (“colo”) or public cloud providers to acquire the computing power your organization needs to achieve maximum productivity and sustainability.

The purpose of this tech guide is to help you evaluate whether you should obtain your own data center, and how you can do so with GIGABYTE. Please note, no two clients are alike; you are highly encouraged to contact our sales representatives with your specific requirements for consultation and tailor-made solutions. However, reading this tech guide should answer many of your fundamental questions, and put you on the path towards building your own data center.
2. Who Needs a Data Center?
A data center provides an assortment of resources and services essential for everyday work. From basic applications such as file sharing and databases, to advanced programs for enterprise management and working remotely, maintaining your own data center allows you to provide better tools and create greater value for your organization.

It also means you will be ready to benefit from the next breakthroughs in technology, whether that is big data, artificial intelligence (AI), deep learning, the Internet of things (IoT), or something we cannot yet imagine.

Just about any kind of workplace stands to gain from having its own data center. Here is a short list of industries that are using data centers to become more productive:
If you are still unsure about whether you should have a data center, ask yourself these following questions:
If the answer to any of these questions is yes, you need your own data center.
