¿Qué es?

Antes, una CPU (unidad central de procesamiento) tenía un solo núcleo: la unidad de procesamiento dentro de la CPU que recibe y ejecuta instrucciones. Sin embargo, los tiempos han cambiado y ahora una sola CPU puede incorporar numerosos núcleos, cada uno capaz de ejecutar su propio conjunto de instrucciones. A su vez, los núcleos pueden contener hilos aún más pequeños, es decir, la secuencia mínima de instrucciones que puede ejecutarse de forma independiente. En conjunto, esto permite que las CPU modernas realicen varias tareas simultáneamente gracias a su gran cantidad de núcleos e hilos. Puede imaginarlo como una autopista de varios carriles: en lugar de hacer que los vehículos circulen más rápido por un solo carril, los núcleos abren varios carriles en la misma vía para que muchas instrucciones se ejecuten al mismo tiempo.

¿Por qué se necesita?

Casi todos los procesadores modernos se basan en una arquitectura multinúcleo. Incorporar más núcleos no solo permite ejecutar más tareas de forma simultánea, eliminando cuellos de botella y acelerando el procesamiento, sino que también abre la puerta a técnicas innovadoras, como la computación paralela y la computación distribuida. La computación de alto rendimiento (HPC), una de las principales tendencias en la computación avanzada, también depende en gran medida de la conexión de varios servidores equipados con procesadores multinúcleo para formar un clúster de cómputo capaz de realizar cálculos a escala de supercomputadora.

¿Cómo puede ayudar GIGABYTE?

Los servidores de GIGABYTE están equipados con los procesadores más avanzados. Por ejemplo, si instalara dos CPU AMD EPYC™ de 64 núcleos en cada nodo de la serie H262 de servidores de alta densidad de GIGABYTE y ocupara un rack completo de 42U (42 unidades de rack) con estos servidores, dejando espacio para algunos equipos de red, tendría hasta 10,240 núcleos en un solo rack. Otro tipo de procesador que está ganando terreno rápidamente se basa en la arquitectura ARM y puede integrar hasta 128 núcleos en una sola CPU. La excelente eficiencia energética de los procesadores ARM contribuye significativamente a reducir el consumo de energía y resolver los problemas relacionados con el calor.
