CPU-Sockel

Was ist das?

Der CPU-Sockel, auch als CPU-Steckplatz bezeichnet, dient dazu, einen Mikroprozessor ohne Löten mit einer Leiterplatte (PCB) zu verbinden. Dadurch lässt sich die CPU auf dem Mainboard einfacher installieren oder austauschen. CPU-Sockel sind in PCs und Servern weit verbreitet und bilden den Gegensatz zu den oberflächenmontierten CPUs in Laptops, die zwar Platz sparen, dafür aber eine komfortable Installation oder einen einfachen Austausch erschweren.

Zu den gängigen CPU-Sockeltypen gehören Pin Grid Array (PGA) und Land Grid Array (LGA). Der Unterschied besteht darin, dass sich beim PGA die Pins am Prozessor und die entsprechenden Kontaktöffnungen im Sockel befinden. Beim LGA hingegen verfügt der Sockel über Pins, auf denen der Prozessor aufliegt. Anzahl und Anordnung der Pins variieren je nach verwendetem CPU-Typ. Allgemein gilt jedoch: Eine höhere Pin-Anzahl und -Dichte ermöglicht die schnellere Übertragung einer größeren Zahl von Datensignalen.

Warum wird er benötigt?

Da der CPU-Sockel das Gehirn des Servers – die CPU – mit allen anderen Komponenten verbindet, ist ein Betrieb ohne CPU-Sockel nicht möglich. Außerdem können CPU-Sockel äußerlich identisch aussehen, elektrisch jedoch inkompatibel sein. Tauschen Sie Prozessoren daher nicht einfach aus, nur weil sie denselben Sockeltyp verwenden. Stellen Sie immer sicher, dass CPU-Sockel und Prozessoren zusammenpassen und füreinander ausgelegt sind.

Wie unterstützt GIGABYTE?

GIGABYTE-Server unterstützen verschiedene Prozessoren, darunter Intel Xeon, AMD EPYC und Ampere Altra mit ARM-Architektur. Jeder Server ist mit CPU-Sockeln ausgestattet, die zu den jeweiligen Prozessoren passen. Je nach Servertyp kann ein Server über einen einzelnen Sockel oder über mehrere Sockel für Aufgaben wie paralleles oder heterogenes Rechnen verfügen.
